On Saturday 18 March, just four weeks after their Installations, RW Bro Brian Ward, the District Grand Prefect, accompanied by W Bro Geoff Whale, the Deputy District Grand Prefect, made their first official visit together to the Sussex District Grand Council meeting, held at sunny Peacehaven.

After having driven to Sussex in appalling weather, the clouds rolled away to yield a bright and sunny afternoon – which matched the sunny welcome received from the District Grand Prefect for Sussex, RW Bro. Gene Earland, and his Deputy, W Bro. John Ellenger.

An unexpected pleasure was discovering that the recently Installed Deputy Grand Master, RW Bro. Ian Bailey, was making his first unaccompanied visit to a District. He was accompanied into the Temple by his acting Director of Ceremonies, warmly welcomed by the District Grand Prefect, and saluted appropriately by everyone present.

After receiving the new Members of the Order within Sussex, the District Grand Prefect then appointed a new Deputy District Grand Prefect, W Bro Ian Taylor, who had been the District Grand Director of Ceremonies. His predecessor, W Bro John Ellenger, had stepped down in order to become the District Grand Treasurer. W Bro Ian Taylor was then obligated, invested and installed by the District Grand Prefect and was presented with his Collarette, Patent of Office and the Book of Constitutions. The acting District Grand Director of Ceremonies then made the usual proclamation.

The District Grand Prefect then proceeded to Invest those District Officers he had appointed for the ensuing year, in a friendly and courteous manner.

After the District Grand Prefect had closed District Grand Council, and photographs taken for posterity, everyone adjourned to the bar. The meeting was concluded by a superb luncheon enjoyed in the convivial company of other District Grand Prefects, and Brethren of the Sussex District.

The meeting had been an enjoyable occasion enjoyed by everyone. In particular, the Brethren from Kent had been able to re-new their acquaintance with former members of Councils in Kent, and, in particular, the superb ceremonies performed at the 'Saturday Club' in Sidcup!
