On Saturday 7th December the District Grand Prefect R. W.Bro. Brian Ward, accompanied by the District Grand Secretary W. Bro. Derek Wilkins, the Past Deputy Grand Master R. W. Bro. Clive Manuel and W.Bro. Roy Skelton set off in the dark to attend the Annual meeting for the District of Surrey. Despite the effects of Storm Darragh which was sweeping across the country with menace the early scouting party from Kent enjoyed a trouble-free journey.

On arrival they were greeted warmly by their hosts and pointed in the direction of teas, coffees and bacon rolls (A perfect start to any day). Within a very short space of time they were joined R. W. Bro Noel Grout, W. Bros Geoff Whale, (Dep. D.G.P.) Tony Maslin and Bro. Peter Hayler all Kentish Masons. W. Bro Raymond Johnson (IPM for West Kent Council) was also in attendance making a total of nine visiting from the district of Kent.

Having enjoyed the refreshments and time spent catching up with friends from other districts the brethren were directed to take their seats in the lodge room. The D.G. P. for Surrey, R. W. Bro. John French opened the meeting in due form before greeting his guests and distinguished visitors from the length and breadth of the country in a very jovial and friendly manner. Following the business of the day and the investiture of his officers for the year ahead the DGP addressed the assembled brethren. The meeting was then closed in due form and the brethren assembled in the bar for refreshment and conversation before taking their seats at the festive board.

A splendid lunch then was enjoyed by all which consisted of smoked chicken Caesar salad, followed by roast leg of lamb served with seasonal vegetables which was followed by a very tasty Apple toffee crumble served with ice cream. When lunch had been consumed the District Grand Prefect. R. W. Bro. John French was toasted firstly by his Deputy W.Bro. Bob Tuthill who presented him with a wonderful cartoon sketch depicting him as a ‘Super Hero’. This toast was quickly followed by another, this time given by our very own R. W. Bro. Clive Manuel who presented him with a plaque highlighting of his love of Chelsea Football Club.

An amazing day was had by all which truly encapsulated all that is good about the Allied Masonic Degree. Fun, Friendship and Enjoyment.

Thankfully during the course of the day Storm Darragh had abated and the journey home proved to be uneventful.
